The year Madison started college, a cancer diagnosis threatened to derail her educational dreams. Four years later, the St. Jude patient graduated from college as an art major with an emphasis on design.
"The journey to my senior year had more twists and turns than a backwoods country road," Madison wrote in a column for St. Jude Inspire. "What started as an amazing freshman year in 2017 took a sharp left when I discovered a lump in my neck. That led to a dizzying month of tests and doctors and then finally, a diagnosis: Stage 2 Hodgkins Lymphoma."
Doctors recommended St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital where she went through four rounds of chemotherapy and then months of physical and occupational therapy to regain her fine motor skills.
“St. Jude is more than a hospital,” said Madison. “It’s hope. It’s a cure. It’s a home.”
During treatment, Madison bonded with the younger kids by sharing her love of arts and crafts. She continues to visit St. Jude for regular checkups.
